“There are many magnificent places on this planet. People find beauty in numerous aspects and regions of our earth. For me, that beauty comes from a 100,000 square mile archipelago that extends over 500 miles of the clearest water in the world, the Islands of the Bahamas. Being a place free of rivers and mountains, this unique landscape still commands an unforeseen emotion. An emotion, derived from a relatively flat yet majestic world of rock, ocean, and sky. These photographs reveal a striking landscape, without the soft early morning light or late afternoon magic hour, so commonly sought after. Instead, they depict the stark reality of a mid-summer day, focusing on the naked, unfurling view portrayed by the reality of the intense sun of the tropics. A sharp, pervading light, manifesting an artistic view often avoided and overlooked. For me, that stark brilliance offers a contrast and truth, which makes up the beauty and essence of these islands.” *** Born and raised in the Bahamas, John spent his formative years growing up in Nassau and the Exumas. At a very young age, camera in hand, he began photographing many aspects of these admirable islands. Living in Florida, and schooled in the States, John’s hobby grew into much more. Attending the Savannah College of Art & Design, John graduated magna cum laude, receiving his B.F.A. in photography. It was here where he studied under several exceptional professors, realizing his passion for large format photography. Upon graduation, John returned to Florida where he worked for four years as an assistant to Clyde Butcher, one of America’s greatest landscape photographers. After living and working in the Big Cypress National Preserve, surrounded by the natural beauty of more than a million acres of National Park wetlands and cypress strands of wild Florida, John’s heart yearned for the more familiar island landscape of the Bahamas, he loves so much. Living in Miami, he returns to the Bahamas quite often to capture on film the unique landscape of the Islands. His immense passion for the medium of photography, along with his unconditional love of the Bahamas, is highly evident in his photographs. His devotion towards nature, and the exquisite beauty and depth of the Bahamas comes shining through in his seascapes, and landscapes.
